In early 2012 Oracle Engineering were requested to review the concept of combusting waste biogas from a waste water treatment plant in a coal fired steam boiler. Following technical and commercial negotiations Oracle were awarded the contract for the complete design and detailing of the system to extract biogas from the water treatment plant and inject into a circulating fluid bed boiler. As part of the engineering any impact upon the boiler heating surface and overall performance has to be considered and factored into the design.
Biogas is essentially methane so this project had two beneficial effects, firstly reducing the boiler fuel input costs and secondly combusting an environmentally unfriendly gas.
